During operation, air passes through the inside of the heat transfer tube, while flue gas passes through the outside of the tube, exchanging heat through the tube wall. It is mainly used for recovering waste heat from flue gas as an air preheater, and in drying processes requiring clean hot air.

5. High operating pressures are common. Generally, tubular heat exchangers can be designed for pressures exceeding 0.6 MPa, making them suitable for heat exchange with high-pressure media.
